High School at Allegany-Limestone Central School

ALCS has 450 high school students who work with nearly 60 faculty and staff as they strive to earn the 25 ½ credits needed to graduate from our program.  These are a few of the accomplishments they achieve in their years with us.

Students choose from more than 75 courses taught in our high school.  These courses are clustered into the areas of English, math, social studies, science, languages, fine and practical arts, technology, and computers.  The individual course titles can be viewed in the guidance section of this site.

All students earning a local or regents diploma must pass at least five NYS regents exams.  We provide Academic Intervention Services for those who need help with this and we offer honors level courses for those qualifying for the extra challenge.  Both are available in the four core areas of English, math, science, and social studies.

Growing numbers of the junior/senior level courses are offered as dual enrollment courses with Jamestown Community College.  This means that students who pass the JCC placement requirement earn both high school and college credit for the courses, which are taught here, by our own faculty, during the regular school day.  In 2007-2008, these courses include English, Spanish, U.S. History, statistics, calculus, and pottery.  Other courses are under review for inclusion in this program.  Each year more ALCS students register in these courses.

St. Bonaventure University also partners with us to enroll qualifying seniors in classes on their campus during the school day.  This reduced-cost service also provides students with the means to earn college credits before high school graduation.  The courses approved by ALCS for this program are elective courses that are not taught at ALCS.  The number of students enrolled varies from year to year.

In conjunction with the Cattaraugus-Allegany BOCES, nearly 20 vocational programs are offered to ALCS students.  These programs are part of the course selections list on our Guidance page, as well.  More than one quarter of our junior and senior classes are attending vocational-technical programs this year.  Two of the newer programs include New Visions, a medical prep program that operates jointly with JCC and Olean General Hospital, and Project Lead The Way (PLTW), an engineering partnership with Rochester Institute of Technology, that is under development.  ALCS will offer the initial course in this particular program in 2007-2008.

Students at ALCS complete work in a computer course, a parenting class, a public speaking course, and career prep/community service/portfolio completion prior to graduating.  They are encouraged to participate in the many extra-curricular clubs and programs we offer after school, along with a wide variety of athletic programs described in the athletic section of this site.  Faculty and staff at ALCS strive to provide quality educational opportunities for every child in our system.   Each year we investigate new possibilities!
